Quiz Picture 6.12 - Cathedral Ceiling:

This quiz question would be hard to for most folks to answer, unless you were in a builder, or really knew your "wood." Here’s the problem…the beams you are looking at are made of Hemlock. Hemlock is a wood that is most often used in the construction of packing crates and pallets. Down in the bottom left corner of the picture, see what the National Forest Services lists for uses of Hemlock. In a Strongwood Log Home, we will always use Douglas Fir as beam material. So, why did this competitor chose to use Hemlock here? Because it was cheaper than Douglas Fir!. Strongwood uses the more expensive Douglas Fir in the construction of their homes because it is the BEST! Douglas Fir is the most structurally sound material for roof rafters.
